Patience

This is definitely the first thing that comes to the mind of many tutors. Tutoring requires a high level of patience. Some students might be uninterested or other simple takes a longer time to absorb certain concepts. We know that students with different aptitudes requires different amount of time to understand a topic. A good tutor is one that can constantly engage the student and not give up easily. Tutors who blow up easily often see their efforts backfire since the students will detest the subject even more. On the contrary, when the student eventually sees improvements in grades due to the relentless efforts by the tutor, it is evident that the patience has paid off. Patience is an important virtue to cultivate given the intense working environment we live in today.

Critical Thinking

Another important skill one can learn is critical thinking. We know different methods of teaching applies to different students. Therefore, a tutor needs to find innovative ways to help the student better understand the syllabus. This forces the tutor to think critically and to think from other perspectives. A good tutor will first seek to understand where the student’s misunderstanding of a certain topic stems from before trying to rectify it.

Being able to think critically goes a long way. Jobs nowadays requires people to come up with innovative ways to help solve problems. Tutoring is hence a good practice!

Innovative Communication

We know a significant proportion of students find school boring and dry. Given the syllabus, tutors are put in a position to come up with engaging and fun methods in order to communicate with the student. Communication is especially difficult when we are having a conversation with others who does not have similar level of knowledge as us. In a tuition setting, the tutor is often far more knowledgeable in the subject than the student. For instance, some maths questions can be solved easily with algebra, but in Primary 3,  algebra has not been taught yet. This forces a tutor to think of other ways and methods to communicate the solution to the student.

Building on communication, tutoring also helps one practice the art of communicating a complex concept in simple terms. Since we want to help the students understand concepts easily, we try to find simple explanations for them while not diluting the core concepts. This is an important especially when we need to communicate to people who might not the subject matter experts at work.

Empathy

Given the increasingly materialistic and practical world we live in, empathy is trait hard to find. Being a tutor allows one to hone his ability to empathise with others. During tuition, the tutor needs to be able to relate with the students on his academic problems. More than that, being empathetic allows the student to become comfortable and hence promote better interaction between the two. This is not possible in school as most of the time, the teachers are the one speaking and they do not have the time to listen to the problems of every student in class. During tuition, listening to the problems of students is key to discovering their actual weaknesses or conceptual misunderstandings. Being able to listen and relate are important traits as they help portray a person as someone that genuinely care for others.
