About 50 percent of all taxpayers are required to submit an income tax return per calendar year, thereby disclosing their income and expenses. What does a tax clerk do?

  • Servicing and advising clients: As a tax consultant you are an expert for tax and business matters and the point of contact for your clients. In addition, you advise them and recommend to them possible actions to improve their financial situation – for example, what taxes the clients can retrieve in hindsight. To do this, you schedule the client meetings on time, are responsible for the preparation and follow-up and, if necessary, accompany them during company audits.
  • Doing accounting for clients: Clients provide data and receipts such as a cash book, invoices and bank documents, which are checked by the tax clerk and processed for proper bookkeeping. In addition, you need to check independently created bookkeeping of clients for accuracy. For a good, clear documentation, you create a file for each client, which you continue to maintain.
  • Creating Business Evaluations and Financial Statements: A particularly important task is to assist or review clients in preparing the tax return and financial statements. In addition, there are business evaluations such as employment tax returns or sales tax returns.
  • Creating Payroll: Typical tasks include signing up and logging off social insurance providers when they start or finish a job so they are insured in accordance with the law. In addition, tax clerks calculate the payroll tax, church tax and social security contributions. This depends, for example, on income or marital status.

What is the difference between a tax clerk and a tax accountant in Germany?

After training as a tax clerk, you often work for tax consultants and support them in their activities. The exact difference: To become a tax consultant, an extra exam must be taken. However, this is possible only after at least ten years of professional experience or a previous degree in business administration or economics. As a tax consultant, you can then start your own business – as a tax consultant.
